Chinese Heritage Centre

Introduction

Launched on 29 June 2003, the Chinese Heritage Centre is a centre for the collection and exhibition of chinese cultural heritage. It is divided into two sections ie exhibition hall and resource room. The objectives of the Centre are as follows:

  1. To display, explain and illustrate the historical collection and cultural heritage of the Chinese community in Malaysia.
  2. To explore and research into the historical paths of the Chinese community from the perspectives of politics, culture, education and the trends of development in these fields.
  3. To compile, edit and publish journals, monographs of historical and heritage interests to enrich the contains of studies on Malaysian Chinese and to broaden interaction among academic in Malaysia and abroad.

Exhibition Hall

The hall display photographs of the Chinese community in Penang in the 19th and 20th centuries pertaining to the early immigrants, social organization, political stance, economics activity, religions, schools and education, Nonya and Baba culture, etc.

Besides, the hall exhibits the history and development of Han Chiang education system from the establishment of Han Chiang Primary Schools, Han Chiang Secondary School to Han Chiang College. A part from photographs, cultural relics, periodicals and magazines of Han Chiang are also on display.

Resource Room

There are two areas of collection in this room:

  • Research on the Chinese community within the country and abroad.
  • Malaysian studies including books, newspaper cuttings, journals, theses & periodicals.

Membership

  1. All HCC staff and students are members.
  2. The public has to apply for membership.

Monday to Friday : 9am to 3:30pm

Saturday (excepts the 4th saturday) : 9am to 11:30am
