HCC’s Diploma in Multimedia Communication Design students made waves at the international-level ADWAVE 2007 creative competitions that was organized by Universiti Sains Malaysia with their outstanding creative entries. At the ADWAVE 2007 official launching at Dewan Tuanku Syed Putra, HCC emerged as the overall winner this year, taking home 10 awards out of 18 that were up for grabs. Being in its tenth year, ADWAVE has grown from strength to strength from a national creative design competition for students from tertiary institutions to one that is highly-regarded in the ASEAN region. According to Mr Ng Shih Chiew, the PR and Publicity Director of ADWAVE, ‘a record number of more than 550 entries from Malaysia and Indonesia were received this year. This is mainly due to ADWAVE’s aggressive promotion and publicity coupled with its attractive prizes for winners’.
HCC students began their ADWAVE campaign since early January and fine-tuned their creative works over two months for the Sloggi Club interactive website, DIGI Prepaid SIM pack design, and Penang Tourism photography competitions. Judging for the competitions was by the sponsors and representatives from advertising agencies that are accredited with the Association of Accredited Advertising Agents Malaysia (4As). First year students Toh Yee Suang and Beh Soo Yeong were elated when they were announced first prize winners for the Sloggi Club interactive website competition. Fellow coursemates, Tracy Koay Lay Ling and Edward Lee Chee Hong walked away with the third prize in the same category while Saw Yee Hui, Lau Yenn Ching and Chong Boon Kee received the consolation prize.
The DIGI Prepaid SIM pack design competition saw four HCC entries making the final cut into the top ten category. DIGI users were then invited to vote for their favourite SIM pack design from among the top ten designs. These SMS votes contributed to the total marks awarded to each design. Wang Wei Lun and Eng Han Pin were awarded the second and third prizes while Woon Woei Jye who had two of his designs in the top ten category received a consolation prize.
In the Penang Tourism ‘Penang Has It All’ photography competition, Patrick Lim Jin Tek’s photography series of the Penang Hill funicular train, Chinese New Year Open House and the Kek Lok Si earned him the first prize. Tracy Koay Lay Ling won the second prize while Jeff Goh Boon Hong and Edward Lee Chee Hong took home a consolation prize each.
Everyone at HCC is elated over these successes and the prize winners attributed their success to the good conceptual grounding and excellent design training they received from their lecturers in their course of study. These achievements reaffirm HCC’s strength in the creative design area highlighting the key strength of our college which effectively integrates theory and concept into practice. All these prize-winning works are currently featured at the HJU Gallery and visitors are welcome to visit the gallery during office hours.
