INTRODUCTION

The School of Business and Management provides affordable and quality education for young, aspiring and ambitious individuals who intend to venture into the corporate world or to start a small business. As such, the school offers 3 diploma programmes ie. Diploma in Business Management, Diploma in Logistics management and Diploma in Accounting. These programmes are designed to provide students with sound knowledge and practical experience in related fields to face the global challenges today. The School maintains its high academic standard through quality delivery of courses by a team of qualified, experienced and dedicated lecturers.

DIPLOMA IN BUSINESS MANAGEMENT

This two-and-a-half year Diploma in Business Management programme covers extensive theoretical concepts of managing business and adopts a modern practical approach in assessing students e.g. by discussing case studies, conducting market surveys and, preparing and making presentations under "real-life" business environment. With such practices, students will then be able to apply what they have learnt in college to real business situations in their future professions or business ventures. On top of the "hard" elements of business, the programme highlights the importance of other "softer" areas of business like governance, ethical and psychological issues of business which of late have become critical "strategic issues" in leading and managing high performing organisations. This holistic approach will have the effect of making the programme more effective and yet balanced and complete.

The programme also places special stress on communication, time-management and presentation skills. Students are given the opportunity to practise these `acquired' skills through both group discussions of assignments and presentations throughout the entire programme. Consequently, these students will become more confident and aggressive, hence more employable when they enter the business world.

In addition to this, the School puts emphasis on the "character and attitudinal" aspects of the students by providing ample opportunities for them to develop their leadership and organisation skills such as requiring them to occasionally organize activities like study tours to factories, board-games, etc..

The programme helps students gain a good knowledge of business management theories, quantitative, analytical and presentation skills which are much sought after by employers in various business and managerial concerns. Students may choose one of the following options: Marketing or Human Resource Management.

Upon successful completion of the programme, students will be well equipped with the skills and knowledge to face the demanding business world and will have the opportunity to enter challenging professions in marketing, sales, human resource management, banking, insurance, etc.

DIPLOMA IN ACCOUNTING

The Diploma in Accounting (DIA) offers potential students the flexibility and opportunity to embark on a professional accounting route by taking the CAT examinations concurrently on their own. DIA is designed to equip students with all the necessary technical skills and knowledge that are required to fulfill an accounting role at the technician level. It is also structured to provide a sound knowledge that is required of a professional accounting executive.

DIA covers a wide range of key accounting and finance areas such as how to interpret finance statements, plan, manage and measure performance using budgets and other financial techniques, make financial decisions and manage all kinds of financial risks.

Career Opportunities

Upon successful completion, DIA graduates will have an excellent grounding for employment in various industries - both financial and non-financial fields - as accounting, administrative and HR executives, or marketing positions since the course structure would assist graduates acquire `specialised' accounting skills and at the same time is flexible enough to enable them to perform well in general management positions.

DIPLOMA IN LOGISTICS MANAGEMENT

With rapid globalization, the Straits of Malacca has become one of the busiest shipping routes in the world. In addition, the strategic location of Penang island makes it an important stopover and transit point for ships. Both the Penang Port and the Bayan Lepas Air Cargo Terminal handle 18% of total ship calls and 24% of air cargo in Malaysia. As the Ministry of Transportation endeavours to develop Malaysia into an international logistics centre, the number of logistics professionals has increased tremendously in recent years.

This programme equips students with the theoretical and practical knowledge of logistics that meets the demands of the logistics industry.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of Diploma in Logistics Management are highly sought after in the transportation industry such as fleet management, freight forwarding, import/ export, inventory management, warehouse management, as well as in government agencies as enforcement officers and auditors and finance and insurance sectors as service providers, appraisers and surveyors.
