Han Chiang College Hosts International Mother Tongue Day By Aaron Ngui Hundreds turned up at Han Chiang College on Saturday when the college hosted the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) International Mother-tongue Day. Those who attended were treated to a myriad of cultural performances including drum show, lion dance, poetry recital and a Chinese Orchestra concert.
The performers were students of Han Chiang High School as well as from other vernacular secondary schools in the state. Visitors also got to enjoy a photo exhibition of the development of the Chinese community in Penang as well as attending seminars which concentrated on the importance of the Chinese language in society. Guests were also able to increase their awareness of Chinese culture as an exhibition showcasing Chinese cultural products and services, including books, were held at the college’s indoor stadium. On hand to officiate the opening ceremony was Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng and Penang State Chinese Schools Affair Coordinating Committee chairman Chong Eng. Also present was Han Chiang College chairman Tan Sri Tan Kok Ping, honorary principal Dato’ Cheah See Kian and principal Dr Wang Yoon Yah. In his speech, Lim said this was the first time a state government had celebrated the day and was glad that Penang was the one which led the way. He said the celebration was part of the state government’s plan to make Penang an international city. He said the state government took mother-tongue education seriously as a person who is conversant in many languages would be able to communicate with investors and tourists. “These people can help in economic development and promote the state internationally,” he said. Earlier, Chong Eng said educating the younger generation in their respective mother-tongue was important to transfer cultural values and knowledge. The Bukit Mertajam Member of Parliament said language was the key to knowledge and that students should be given that key to be competitive. Meanwhile, Cheah encourage those who did not know the Chinese language to pick it up.
“Those who were already familiar with the language should continue to strive in improving their command of the language,” he said.
